COURSE OVERVIEW
Cathy Malchiodi prepared a new and engaging training in Montreal, based on her recent research on trauma and the latest theories and practices in the field.

Addressing traumatic stress requires a multi-sensory, body-based, and implicit approach. This workshop focuses on how Expressive Arts Therapy (movement, sound, image making, enactment, play, and storytelling) to reset, re-regulate, and restore the nervous system when challenged by the overwhelming experiences traumatic stress creates in body and mind.
This highlights the importance of using both sensory processing and expressive strategies to enhance and increase successful installation of safety, regulation, and co-regulation. Emphasis is on supporting Restorative Embodiment -- the experience of the body/mind sense of well-being and expanding the “circle of capacity” for joy, enlivenment, self-efficacy, and social engagement.

Participants will deepen their understanding of three major areas – restorative embodiment, sensory integration, and expressive arts therapy. Best practices in each area are explained with an emphasis on emerging research on how these frameworks support the connections between implicit recovery [the body’s sense of well-being] and explicit restoration [new narratives that support healing of both the body and mind]. Emphasis is on learning and applying new strategies in Bilateral Movement Desensitization and Resensitization (BMDR™) through various senses (movement, sound, rhythm, synchrony, attunement, reflexive convergence, image making) and demonstrating how these approaches integrate current concepts found in Polyvagal Theory, the autonomic nervous system, and somatic therapies.

Training goals:

Participants will be able to:
Define expressive arts therapy and sensory processing as key concepts to address traumatic stress (hyperactivation and hypoactivation);
1. Define embodiment, disembodiment, and restorative embodiment;
2. Define at least three differences between the Window of Tolerance and Circle of Capacity Models;
3. Define Bilateral Movement Desensitization and Resensitization;
4. Identify at least five considerations in applying bilateral movement and bilateral drawing;
5. Apply at least three bilateral movement approaches to support regulation in individuals with traumatic stress;
6. Describe four components of the Expressive Arts Therapy Polyvagal Wheel;
7. Define exteroception and interoception as key concepts in restoring capacity in individuals with traumatic stress;
8. Identify and apply at least three evidence-informed expressive arts therapy approaches to establish safety;
9. Identify and apply at least three evidence-informed expressive arts therapy and sensory integration approaches to create resourcing experiences;
10. Define expressive arts therapy and sensory processing approaches as “bottom up” and “top down” interventions.
