COURSE OVERVIEW
Dr. Cathy Malchiodi has developed a new and compelling workshop grounded in emerging research on sensory processing in trauma and the latest advances in trauma-informed practice.
This is a rare opportunity to learn in person from a true leader in the field, in a workshop that promises to significantly deepen and enrich clinical practice.
As psychologist and expressive arts therapist internationally recognized as one of the leading voices in trauma-informed practice, she has delivered more than 800 keynote presentations worldwide and has been featured alongside major figures in the trauma field, including Bessel van der Kolk, Peter Levine, Ruth Lanius, Bruce Perry, etc.

Latest research in trauma field revealed that addressing traumatic stress often benefits from multi-sensory, body-based, and implicit strategies, not only talk-based processing. In this workshop, Cathy Malchiodi
will guide participants through expressive and experiential methods that support nervous system regulation and recovery
Drawing on practices such as movement, rhythm and sound, image-making, enactment, play, and storytelling, the workshop demonstrates how these approaches can help re-set and re-regulate the nervous system when trauma disrupts emotion, attention, and a sense of safety.

The workshop integrates best practices and emerging research across three core areas: restorative embodiment, sensory integration, and expressive/experiential therapies. Emphasis is placed on how these frameworks bridge implicit recovery (the body’s felt sense of steadiness) with explicit restoration (new meanings and narratives that support healing).
Participants will also learn and practice strategies drawn from Bilateral Movement Desensitization and Resensitization (BMDR™) through multiple sensory channels (movement, sound, rhythm, synchrony, attunement, reflexive convergence, and image-making) and will examine how these methods align with contemporary concepts from Polyvagal Theory, autonomic nervous system regulation, and somatic therapies.

Workshop goals

Participants will be able to:
4.    Define expressive/experiential methods and sensory processing as key concepts for addressing traumatic stress.
5.    Define embodiment, disembodiment, and restorative embodiment.
6.    Describe at least three differences between the Window of Tolerance and Circle of Capacity models.
7.    Define Bilateral Movement Desensitization and Resensitization (BMDR™).
8.    Identify at least five clinical considerations for using bilateral movement and bilateral drawing.
